York may not cry out to you as ‘the’ place to go for a weekend away of celebrations but if you’re looking for a a little charm and a lot of class then York is a top UK hen party destination choice. Voted European Tourism City of the Year in 2007, York is both a historic Roman city and a modern day gem with all you need in the way of pubs, bars, restaurants, clubs and activities to create a stylish hen party weekend. The city is located ‘up north’, surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire dales and situated directly on the river Ouse if you want to take a cruise. And best of all, York is so compact that you can get around most of the city with ease.
One of the main attractions of York is the racecourse just outside the city and it’s here you and your ladies can get your glad rags on and have a flutter on the horses. Most of the races start around midday and finish near four or five so you have a chance to grab a few drinks and watch the riders before heading out for a spectacular meal in York and late night cocktails. Another popular activity in York is to shimmy onto a boat for a cruise on the Ouse. You’ll get to see the city from the water and you can also arrange to have dinner on the cruise with a few drinks. Additionally, if want a touch of relaxation then Redseven can also organise a spa treatment session for you and your girls before you head out on the town, and a cocktail masterclass while you’re in town.
For most hen and stag parties the usual plan is to pub crawl around the many York pubs and then head onto the Micklegate part of town which is filled to the brim with high-tack larry bars and clubs, and why the hell not? It’s your party after all! But, if you’re looking for a less booze fuelled night with slightly more class then heading north of the river is your best bet. Here, you will come across a number of cool lounge bars where you can sip cocktails and relax after a gorgeous meal in one of the nearby restaurants late into the evening. In particular, Biltmore Bar and Grill is recommended. However, much of the clubbing action is to be found in Micklegate so you may find yourselves trotting over the river to the clubs after midnight to get your groove on. Either way, York is so compact that it’s a ten minute walk or a very cheap taxi to get almost anywhere in the city!
