Torquay in Devon is as close as you can get to a Mediterranean getaway in the U.K. It’s got everything a beach resort abroad has – sun, sea, sand, breathtaking scenery, nightlife and palm trees to boot – and it’s all on your doorstep! Why wouldn’t you book your hen weekend in the English Riviera?
Torquay is one of those rare places in England that doesn’t experience the dreaded typical English weather. The curved bay creates a sun trap, meaning the weather in Torquay is similar to that of the French Riviera – hence the name. Hen parties can treat themselves to a few days of ultimate relaxation by palm tree lined blue flag beaches, against the backdrop of rolling hills and an unusually sparkling sea, without the cost of flights, and still get to top up those all important tans before the wedding.
As well as sandy coves and the vibe of a cosmopolitan resort, Torquay has plenty of fun on offer to keep hen parties occupied – it can’t all be lying on sun loungers and wining and dining, you know. Here’s a line-up of some of the best days out money can buy in Torquay, to make your hen weekend extra special.
First up, Torquay is more than capable of catering for the adventure lovers among you. Many of the beaches provide water sports such as scuba diving, water skiing, and even sailing lessons, as well as dry line activities like go karting and paintballing for the more competitive types. The jewel in Torquay’s activity crown however is Kent’s Cavern. This is a cave system dating back to prehistoric times, so you and your hens can escape the sun for a bit and explore a world over 400 million years old. Pretty exciting stuff.
After all that activity, you and your hens will need to relax. Luckily, there are several spas in Torquay, as well as a range of ways to sit back and enjoy the picturesque views around Torquay, including carriage rides along the promenade and a sea train along the cliff tops. If on your relaxing day you just so happen to stray towards some shops, the Torquay Harbour and Marina area is ideal for boutique shopping, restaurants and bars.
But what about Torquay at night? Any legendary hen weekend needs to involve some incredible partying, and luckily you can do just that in Torquay, all under the lights of the Millennium Bridge which links the North and South piers of the harbour. Cafe Mambo Rooftop Bar is an ideal place for celebratory champagne cocktails whilst watching the sun set over the English Riviera before moving on to Bohemia Club or The Venue. These are two of the most popular nightclubs in Torquay which guarantee a night of pure hedonism and dancing until the small hours.
Finally, finish off your hen weekend with something truly special and different. Torquay plays host to a catch and cook excursion where you and your party can sail out into the bay, admire Torquay from a distance whilst soaking up the sun and catching some fresh fish, before returning to shore whilst a chef teaches you how to prepare the fish to perfection. This is followed by a barbecue and an ideal opportunity to toast to the bride to be!
