Formula 1boss Bernie Ecclestone and Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo were left with egg on their faces in the wake of the most thrilling Formula 1 race for years.
Lewis Hamilton took the chequered flag to cut his team-mate Nico Rosberg’s overall lead to 11 points.
Both Ecclestone and di Montezemolo have slammed the current state of Formula 1. Di Montezemolo likened the sport to taxi driving with drivers saving fuel rather than pressing the pedal to the metal.
After his victory at the weekend Hamilton thanked Mercedes chiefs for allowing him and team-mate Nico Rosberg to battle it out until the end of the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.
Meanwhile Fernando Alonso has called on Ferrari to work around the clock to get to the failing marque back to pole position. Alonso finished ninth and team-mate Kimi Raikkonen 10th, both over 30 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton.
Earlier Bernie Ecclestone had said Formula 1 is “unacceptable” for fans.
Speaking at the Bahrain International Circuit he said: “I don’t think the way things are at the moment is acceptable to the public. People buying tickets to come here expect to see what Formula One used to be.”
The duel in the desert left Bernie eating his words.
