33 couples, both gay and straight, married live onstage during the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, during a powerful performance by Macklemore and Lewis of their song, ‘Same Love.’ Lewis has described it as ‘the ultimate statement of equality.’ The song was also in celebration of an incredible year in the fight for gay marriage rights, as the United States abolished the ‘Defence of Marriage Act’. Gay marriage is now legal in 17 states, with Illinois set to join them in June.
The spectacular televised ceremony was officiated by recently deputized Queen Latifah, as the stage was transformed into a church, before the couples celebrated tearfully, watched by an equally tearful audience. The final surprise of the evening came when Madonna delivered a heart-felt performance of ‘Open Your Heart.’ Katy Perry was amongst those to catch a bouquet.
The theme of unity continued throughout the Grammy Awards, as several musical acts joined forces to deliver some memorable performances. Happily married Jay Z and Beyoncé opened the Awards ceremony with a sexy rendition of ‘Drunk In Love,’ and Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunited for a performance of ‘Queenie Eye.’ Finally, Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Nile Rogers and Stevie Wonders wowed with the anthem of last year, ‘Get lucky.’ Daft Punk won big with seven nominations and five awards on the night, including ‘Best Album’ and ‘Record of the Year.’
And the ‘Best Dressed’ goes to…
