Albufeira on the south coast of Portugal is known as The Gateway to the Algarve. It’s a top tourist destination and since the 1960’s it has been one of the most popular towns in the Algarve — a region that attracts 5 million people a year — so they must be doing something right!
It is a town steeped in ancient Mediterranean culture, and you will notice this in the relaxed pace (at least by day!) of life and the amazing gastronomy. This destination boasts some of the best beaches in Portugal, if not Europe, and they are well stocked with beautiful women. The nightlife here is also what you would expect from a fantastic seaside resort, and on Areias de São João (known locally as The Strip) you will find bars, restaurants and nightclubs in full swing after the sun goes down, if not before.
There are some brilliant things to do in Albufeira for a stag party. If you like cycling or hiking the hills around, the town offers some spectacular views, if you like you can cycle through to the old town and have a guided tour, which sheds light on the town’s bygone history, or for a more Indiana Jones look, rent a horse and ride into the sunset!
Yet it is the seafarer that will be most pleased in this beautiful city as it is has an incredible array of watersports on offer, including diving, parasailing, and even deep-sea fishing. However, the best of the bunch has got to be taking your very own ‘pirate ship’, Leaozinho (or Little Lion), on the high seas. Whilst aboard you will cruise down the coast, have a BBQ, drink some grog with your mates, and even visit an island with caves that you are free to explore (buried treasure anyone). If this doesn’t sound like a brilliantly unique stag party idea, then what does?
There is both a go kart track and quad bike tour available to those motorheads amongst you, so don the helmet and get revving. The quad bike tour will take you on and off-road both along cobbled streets and deep into the brush, speeding along rolling hills.
In the evening in Albufeira there are some excellent restaurants serving beautifully cooked fish and seafood caught fresh that day but don’t forget to try the street grills, famed for their succulent chicken and fish combinations for that authentic Portuguese flavour. There are two main areas for going out, the Old Town and The Strip. The old town offers a more relaxed atmosphere and with some exceptional restaurants serving first rate fish stews and delicious wine, it’s easy to see why it is so popular. The Strip offers the younger crowd a chance to drink, eat and party until the small hours and of course, to dance with the beautiful women that grace the clubs with their presence. Whilst here, don’t miss the Kiss club for some pounding house music and an obscenely loud sound system. The bars are so plentiful and close together that it is easy to catch the happy hour prices on your way to the club, and with so many offers on even outside happy hour, you will be sure to save a few pennies!
This place is perfect for the stag weekend – it has beautiful beaches, cheap bars and clubs, great food, and even better – pirate ships!
