Wedding outfits can be difficult to get right. Most of us try to combine sophisticated and feminine while  still looking on-trend, but it’s hard to avoid the traditional tried and tested wedding guest looks. If you’re going to a spring or summer wedding in 2014 and want to try out a wedding outfit that’s a little bit different, this wedding style guide will help you navigate the SS/14 trends.

The shapes

Spring/summer 2014 marks the arrival of four key shapes that can be styled perfectly for a wedding: the coy yet flirty off-the-shoulder dress, fun and edgy two-pieces, daring and smart culottes, and the sophisticated bare midriff.

Perfect new shapes for a spring or summer wedding outfit: off-the-shoulder dress, two-piece sets, culottes and bare midriffs.

The details

Wedding looks are all about adding the little details to make your outfit extra special. Pleated skirts and dresses are huge for SS14, and sophisticated fringing is ideal to spice up a basic spring summer look. Double denim is also back on trend this season, and although we wouldn’t suggest rocking up to a wedding in head to toe white wash, adventurous wedding guests might like to try out this season’s grown up denim dresses.

The colours

Be bold when doing your wedding outfit shop with spring/summer’s bright orange, futuristic metallic, girly pinks and monochrome.

The prints

Floral prints, that trusty wedding outfit favourite, has been given an abstract makeover for spring/summer 2014 with bright colours and bold shapes, but our favourite print this year has to be the tropical trend, which is pretty enough for a Summer wedding but still keeps its edge. Gingham is also making a comeback this year, but steer away from school girl dresses and seek out stylish two-pieces and sexy gingham pencil skirts with simple cami tops.

The accessories: hats, backpacks, sensible shoes, slingbacks

Wedding accessories just got interesting. This spring/summer must-have bag is the grown up backpack, recreated for the practical fashion lover in leather and structured shapes. Sensible shoes are also everywhere this season, with flat, chunky sandals, cut out brogues and low-heeled sling backs here to make sure you can keep dancing at the wedding disco until the early hours. Finally, it’s time to ditch the enormous wedding hats and go for a simple, stylish summery hat that you can actually wear more than once.
