Getting The Best Man Speech Right

So you’ve been given the role of best man, a pretty special label to be given! Best not let them down…

Organising the stag do is the easy part (especially if you let us do it for you whilst you take the glory!) but when it comes to writing and performing the speech…it’s a whole other story…

OK, pressure aside, as we’re not here to add any more to what you’re already feeling; it’s not as daunting as it may initially seem. Honestly. As long as you’re prepared, you’ll smash it.

Speaking in front of an audience

The most intimidating task at hand for most, is likely to be the fact that you’ve got to stand up in front of a room full of people, some of whom will be complete strangers. Lets get this one main issue out of the way first. Every single person in the room will be rooting for you as it’s likely they’ve been in your position before. Further, weddings are happy occasions and even better than that, they’re happy occasions where the booze is flowing so your audience is going to be a bunch of happy, tipsy people; ideal! Trust us, be confident and people will listen and laugh.

Researching and Preparing

Now we’ve got the most daunting aspect out of the way, you can relax and enjoy researching and preparing the speech. Summing up years and years of friendship into a 15 minute (we recommend no longer if you want to keep people’s attention!) speech is going to be difficult but just pick out a couple funny stories and good memories. Ask the family members, the bride-to-be and other friends too for anything they think would be good to contribute.

Make sure you practice speaking the speech a couple of weeks beforehand as this will make it much less scary when you come to do it for real and it will sound more natural. This doesn’t mean you can’t have the speech too refer to on paper, this is recommended in case you get mind blank!

Balancing sentimentality with humour

Finally, make sure you get a good balance between the soppy stuff and the more humorous anecdotes, some of which of course, is allowed to make the groom blush. The trick is to embarrass him a bit without dropping him in it. There’s only so much you can divulge about your stag party in Riga for example, it’s probably best not to mention the grooms’ private dance at the strip club. Remember, parents and grandparents as well as potentially children; be respectable.

There you have it. Take some time to prepare, hold your head high and go for it!
