First glimpse of Fifty Shades of Grey promises more romance than raunch

Is Mr Grey a big softie at heart?

Universal Pictures  screened early scenes of Fifty Shades of Grey for a group of hand-picked journalists and cinema owners in Las Vegas yesterday.

The movie is the first of a planned  trilogy based on British author EL James’ steamy bonkbusters.

Artist turned filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson, who helmed the much-praised 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, was hired to direct in June last year.

The movie stars Jamie Dornan as the filthy rich (and just plain filthy) Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson, as Anastasia Steele, the girl-next-door with a taste for the dark side.

The sneak peek failed to raise the temperature of The Wrap’s correspondent who said love, actually, was the “over-arching theme”.

The Hollywood Reporter also found the clips “more romantic than sexual”: “There was a brief glimpse of Johnson wearing a black blindfold in a red room, but most of the focus was on the couple’s courting.”

Variety reported that: “The now well-known elevator exchange between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele made it into the first look, as did lot of PG kissing and a sneak peek into the red room, but audience members seated around this reporter expressed a similar sentiment – Universal played it safe.”

Fifty Shades of Grey is released on February 13, 2015.
