It seems space and time-deprived Londoners are missing the company of our furry friends. Last year the public donated over £100,000 through crowd-sourced funding website Indiegogo to enable cat-lover Lauren Pears to open a cat café in East London this May.
So, what actually is a cat café? Cat cafés originated in the cities of Japan, another part of the world where people just don’t have the living space or time to keep their own cats as pets. Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium will be a place where stressed Londoners can buy a coffee and sit in the company of the resident cats, brought in from Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green, who will be allowed to roam the cat café freely. Sounds a bit mad, right? But when you think that spending time stroking cats has been strongly linked to stress-control, and the amount of happiness that looking at cat videos on the internet can bring you, it makes sense, right? If you’re wondering whether this might be a bit unfair on the cats, being mauled all day by affection-starved members of the London public, Lauren Pears has thought of that. The cats are being settled into the café to allow them time to adjust, and will always be given a cat-only garden if they want to escape the customers and have some me-time. The café is also being designed with cat stairs on the walls and all sorts of play-things so the cats can stay cat-like an active. We can imagine they’ll be the most pampered cats in London!
The cat café has also been criticised as slightly unhygienic. Isn’t sitting eating your coffee and cake around animals a bit gross? As far as hygiene is concerned, all food and drink will be prepared well away from the fluffy feline attractions. Also, how many cat owners do you know who kick the cat out every time they want a cuppa? There will also be pots of anti-bacterial hand gel on the tables. We’ve seen the cats, and frankly can’t wait to get our tickets in May! So, if you’re planning a trip to London this Spring and fancy curling up with a cat after a long day of shopping, perhaps you should pay a visit to Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium.
