Let The Burns Night Celebrations Begin

Category Hen Party

Burns Night will be celebrated across Scotland and England tonight, and of course, anywhere else that a patriotic Scotsman resides.

The tradition of Burns Night is still going strong 200 years later after the death of Robert Burns; a Scottish poet who has become Scotland’s most cultural icon through his works of poetry. The origin of Burns Night come from close friends of Burns who held a tribute supper to celebrate his life and it has been a Scottish tradition ever since.

Numerous suppers and general celebrations will be kicking off this evening so those of you finding yourself  on a hen party in Edinburgh this weekend then the celebrations will still be going on and the atmosphere will be buzzing.

The supper of course, includes feasting on haggis, a quintessentially Scottish dish made with sheep intestine. Not for the faint hearted! In memory of Burns, the evenings of celebration include poetry recitals of Burn’s most famous poems, as well as other traditional light hearted humorous speeches including the “Toast to the Lassies.” This toasts the women for making the supper followed by the male speaker reciting their views on women which are slightly outdated! Luckily, the women get to reply, a chance to get their own back!

If you can’t stomach haggis, check out Cuckoo’s Bakery in Edinburgh where they will be paying a unique tribute to the poet with Burns’ Cupcakes; cupcakes covered in whisky flavoured icing with whisky custard. Definitely worth a try.

Happy Burns Night!
