Big Fat Gypsy Weddings Is Channel 4′s Most Viewed TV Show Of 2011
You’d have to have been living underground for the past year to have missed out on the brash, colourful and downright entertaining TV show “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” that took to our screens last year, confirming that there are a lot of different people out there with very different ways of doing things.
The documentary follows Irish travellers as they prepare for their weddings and according to Channels 4′s audience figures, it was the most viewed TV programme in 2011 with a whopping 9.71 million viewers. For the Christmas special, the show got 7.24 million, almost 2 million more than the 5.38 million that tuned in for the Royal Wedding in April. So what made this such an intriguing programme that everyone wanted to watch?
Well firstly, before Channel 4 decided to air this documentary on Irish travellers and their weddings, little has been seen or understood about their culture and considering their way of life differs a lot from what most of us are used to, it makes for inevitably interesting viewing. Plus, those neon pink sequinned adorned dresses that make Jordan’s wedding dress look almost classy, never get boring to look at!
So what can possibly top the ratings for 2012? My Big Fat Gypsy Hen Party? Maybe. Hen parties were only touched on once when traveller Josie took her hen party to Lanzarote which commenced alcohol free. No, channel 4 may have to come up with something even more original this time, especially as it’s been announced that “Big Fat Gypsy Weddings” is to be aired on American TV network TLC which will follow a similar format to the UK series.
Whatever comes next from Channel 4 (and we’re sure it will follow the usual format of controversy), it’s safe to say their viewing ratings demonstrate they succeeded this time!
