Prince Harry’s Best Man Speech

With the biggest wedding of the year approaching, there are sure to be some serious nerves flying around between William, Kate and the rest of the royal family, in particular, for Prince Harry. As brother and best man for the future King of England, there’s no chance of being able to simply scribble a few words of a best man speech on a piece of paper a week before (not that we recommend any best man should do that anyway!).

Best man speeches are notoriously nerve racking responsibilities to fulfil so imagine you are in the position of Harry and your audience includes some of the most famous people in the world and the Queen of England? With Harry’s track record of being the mischievous member of the royal family, you’d think that William wouldn’t get away from the speech lightly; surely there’s going to be a few embarrassing stories thrown in there right? Especially as Harry has been quoted to have said of William that he will “make sure that we dig him in the ribs a bit and embarrass him – make him lose a bit of hair.” However, with the crowd Harry is up against, he’s surely going to have to be somewhat selective with his stories!

So what makes a good best man speech? Well, it’s a given that you will know the groom already very well so there is a fair amount that you will know about them that you can naturally include. One of the most difficult aspects of a decent speech though is getting the balance right between wit without being offensive, and sentimentality without being boring. The last thing you want to do is have the parents and grandparents of the bride and groom cringing in their seats or your friends falling asleep at their table.

Ultimately though, the key is preparation, advice from other friends of the groom and confidence (Dutch courage!). If you’re reading this now and feeling nervous preparing your speech for a friends’ impending wedding, you’ll feel better counting yourself lucky you’re not Harry!
